Caption: May 5th. 1993. Early in the afternoon while plotting storm data at Amarillo National Weather Service we began to get excited, all of the ingredients for a really good chase day were starting to form on the dryline. The “T-BOX” that chase partner Warren Faidley had drawn put us on course to the North Texas panhandle. About an hour south of Gruver Texas we could see rapid storm development on the horizon, shortly thereafter the NWS dropped their own Tornado watch box. As we passed through the town of Gruver Texas we noticed a large rotating column which turned into a large funnel cloud. About 15 miles NE of Gruver we called in one of the first Skywarn reports on this tornado as it touched down at 6:38 pm in Hansford county Texas. We were driving east as quickly as possible trying to silhouette the tornado against the western sky. This image was shot while driving through a 60 knot crosswind (low level inflow jet) at 6:50 PM, with one hand on the steering wheel and one hand on the camera, I saw the windmill approaching and I clicked off three frames. My eyes were watching the debris blowing across the road so I did not have time to shoot more than three frames. After shooting a few more images of this tornado across the green wheat fields the road came to a muddy end. After backtracking for 25 minutes we once again caught up to this tornado as it roped out 4.5 miles east of Guymon Oklahoma. Although it was too dark to shoot film, we video-taped six more tornados from this same storm as it traveled across the Oklahoma panhandle and onto the Kansas plains. This tornado, rated F-3, was on the ground for 37 minutes, destroying a farm in the Oklahoma panhandle although no injuries were reported. Just a perfect day in Tornado Alley. Caption: Lightning over the western side of the Catalina Mountains by Push Ridge, this is the area just above Catalina State Park. This incredible storm dropped huge bolts all across the mountain and the storm then rolled off the mountain top down into the Tucson Valley.

Huge bolt in a rare winter time thunderstorm. Shot in a February storm it is rare to see lightning like this in the winter time. After this storm passed we were caught in a blinding hail shaft from this same storm crossing Interstate 10 while driving back to Tucson. It was almost scary. There was so much hail on the road we had to go into four wheel drive.

Caption: Lightning in Pinal county Arizona this image shows a huge set of bolts and even has a tinny water tower in the image to show scale, the water tower is over 75 feet tall. This was a huge multi-branched bolt which came out of a dying thunderstorm.

Caption: Severe thunderstorm over Tucson Arizona USA with lightning bolt coming out of top of thunderhead to the ground. The Saguaro cactus in the foreground is so sharp you can see the cactus needles. The storm top is around 22,000 feet which makes this a very long lightning strike. You always wish for a huge lightning bolt to coming from the top of the storm but it rarely happens. That night I could see green flashes of bright light on the horizon as some of these bolts struck power transformers down on Oracle road. This was a 100 megabyte drum scan from a 35mm file.
